Kichwa Indian Artisan Association

Volunteer With Kurypachamama

Volunteers for Kury Pachamama don’t come only to work; they also become part of the family

Your volunteer experience will start with a tour of the world famous Otavalo market, in which we will be able to personally explain our mission and how we are unique from the average artisans one may encounter in Otavalo. Here at Kury Pachamama we are looking to provide a unique experience for our volunteers.  We want your time with us to help you achieve your personal goals as well as help us grow as an organization. We are always looking for volunteers with special projects in mind or those who can help with technical support, marketing, achieving non-profit status, getting fair-trade certifications, or grant writing..

Imagine the Andes before sunrise. You have just been woken by a conversation in Kichwa, the indigenous language of the Andes. You are greeted by Carlos who shows you the way to the field where you will help with the planting of corn and beans, the staples of the Andean diet. Your co-worker is a smiley toothed Andean woman that is dressed in her traditional jewelry and cloths. As you will soon learn, she is the definition of Andean efficiency. Once work is done you have an early lunch offering to Pachamama- the Mother Earth. After this your volunteering begins. The rest of the day is flexible and regularly includes helping with meals, time for your own projects, a few hours for research and interacting with the various members of our artisan community.

Some Spanish skills are needed, but at times you will work with English speakers or even Kichwa that may speak broken Spanish. We ask that you commit to 30 days to get the full experience that we have to offer.  There is no cost to the volunteers.
